Calcium carbonate

  • Benchmark: Benchmark 3
  • Assessed: 2015-06-22

Used primarily in Food Contact & Additives, Industrial / Manufacturing, and Textile Applications applications, Calcium carbonate is specifically used in anti-caking agent, buffer, food industry, nutrient supplement, stabilizer, and textile applications.

Calcium carbonate is used as a nutrient supplement, pH control/buffering agent, anti-caking agent, stabilizer and thickener, and used in the production of paint, adhesives, plastics, paper, rubber, textiles, inks, and chalk (HSDB 2014). It is produced via the reaction of calcium chloride and sodium or ammonium carbonate or refined from deposits of limestone, marble, or chalk (HSDB

2014). Calcium carbonate is listed as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the U.S. FDA

(2013).
