Used primarily in Cosmetics & Personal Care, and Industrial / Manufacturing applications, Hydrogenated polydecene is specifically used in abrasive, bulking, film-former, glazing agent, and release agent.
Hydrogenated polydecene is synthesized by oligomerization of pure 1-decene to the tri-, tetra-, penta- and hexa-decene molecules, followed by hydrogenation to full saturation of the oligomers; both processes are carried out in the presence of a catalyst (EFSA 2020). Hydrogenated polydecene is used in industrial manufacturing, metal working fluids, lubricants, and coatings. It is also used as a food additive (glazing agent) and in cosmetic formulations as an abrasive, bulking and film forming agent (EFSA 2020, CIR 2020). The CIR Expert Panel determined that hydrogenated polydecene is safe for use in cosmetics in the present practices of use and concentration (up to 59%) (CIR 2020).
