Propylene glycol

  • Benchmark: Benchmark 2
  • Assessed: 2014-11-30

Used primarily in Cosmetics & Personal Care, Plasticizers & Polymer, and Solvents & Cleaning applications, Propylene glycol is specifically used in conditioning agent, extractant, plasticizer, polymer industry, preservative, and solvent.

Propylene glycol has numerous functions in industrial processes and consumer products. It is manufactured from hydroxyacetone by yeast reduction, by non-catalytic liquid-phase hydration of propylene oxide at 100 – 200ºC (major industrial method), by chlorination and treatment with sodium carbonate from propylene, and by heating glycerol with sodium hydroxide (HSDB 2010).

Chemical Synonyms 1,2-Propanediol, 2,3-Propanediol, 2-Hydroxypropanol, Methylethylene glycol
